What Is a Dumpling?

A dumpling is, generally speaking, any form of boiled, steamed or even fried dough. The dough usually consists of a base of flour, eggs, and water. Additions to that base can be nearly anything: yeast makes a raised bread dumpling; potato makes potato dumplings; many cultures' dumplings include fruit, vegetables, or meat. Nearly all cultures have some variety of dumpling . . . And a brief survey of the world's foods shows what a variety it is:

Mexico has albondigas; Italy has gnocchi; China has wontons; and of course Middle Europe has knedliki. It is this last type of dumpling in which Chateau has been specializing for the last seventy years. Today Chateau produces two varieties of frozen dumplings which can form a nutritious base for your family's meals.

Chateau Bread Dumplings (Houskovy Knedliki) are yeast-raised dumplings that accompany meat and gravy wonderfully when steamed or stand by themselves when simply sautéed in butter.

Chateau Potato Dumplings (Bramborovve Knedliki) are mashed potato-based dumplings that are also excellent with gravy and are equally delicious in chicken-and-dumpling soup.
